About the Founder

Felix Rottmann - Founder and Director of Kisasa ESG Consultants - is a German/Tanzanian, MA qualified, environmental and social governance specialist with extensive relevant professional experience in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Middle East. He has been responsible for identifying and managing environmental and social (E&S) sustainability issues since 2008, primarily in compliance with international best practice as typically embodied by the E&S safeguard standards of international financial institutions (e.g. IFC’s Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability), finance institutions (e.g. KfW, DEG, EIB, AfDB, Triodos, JP Morgan, Proparco, Finnfund, Norfund, IFU, EKF, UK Export Finance and FMO), the Equator Principles (EPs) and the World Bank Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Guidelines.

Most recently, through Kisasa, he was responsible for developing the Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) for four agricultural projects in Ivory Coast (financed by KfW and Atradius) as well as supporting its implementation by providing guidance and capacity building to the local team, developing an IFC-compliant Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) for a road project in Ghana (financed by UK Export Finance and JP Morgan) and carrying out a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) on a textile project in Kenya (financed by the United Nations).

Prior to founding Kisasa ESG Consultants, Felix had overall responsibility for managing all E&S aspects at the 310MW LTWP project in Kenya, as well as being the Managing Director of its Winds of Change Foundation. During his five years at LTWP, Felix played a key role in developing, constructing and operating the project, which is Africa's largest wind farm, primarily by (i) ensuring that it complied with (and in several instances surpassed) international best practice guidelines on E&S performance, and (ii) establishing and running a foundation that raised and invested over €2.5M in community development projects that have helped improve the livelihoods of people living in Laisamis Constituency, Marsabit County, Kenya.

Prior to working at LTWP, Felix worked as a Social Safeguards Specialist for a consultancy firm in the UK with a focus on international projects’ social management systems and performances; in the private sector in Gambia promoting sustainable tourism business models that contribute to poverty reduction; in South Africa on township development projects; and, in the non-governmental sector promoting peace and co-existence using sport initiatives in Israel and Palestine.

Felix has a natural and holistic understanding of different cultures and perceptions of reality, as a result of having (i) lived in Tanzania, Kenya, Gambia, Germany and the UK, (ii) travelled to more than 30 countries, and (iii) worked on more than 25 projects.

Uniquely, Felix has worked for consultancies, lenders and developers, meaning that he has a thorough understanding of the value and importance of international E&S safeguard standards, as well as the daily challenges and realities that lenders and developers face in practice. Through his work, he has attained an in-depth understanding of how E&S safeguard standards have developed over time and why they have become increasingly important to project developers and financiers.

This rare mixture of experiences enables Kisasa ESG Consultants to add meaningful input to projects, by identifying potential E&S risks as well as develop, implement and monitor environmental and social management systems that aim to address these risks in a practical and context specific manner.

To provide high quality services, we collaborate with a network of skilled professionals in related specialisms.
